Sssst! Be quiet, my little sister is napping. 
Jane is reading in the garden

Past Continuous
iets heeft in het verleden een tijdje voortgeduurd.

- was/were + ww + ing
Bij twee gebeurtenissen in het verleden krijgt de langste gebeurtenis de continuous vorm! (Gebruik met Past Simple)

I was sleeping when you texted me.

Present Perfect Continuous
Iets is in het verleden gebeurd/begonnen en je wil vooral de tijdsduur benadrukken/ bij recently, lately 

- have/has + been + ww + ing

I have been writing 12 emails this morning. 
I have been waiting here for an hour.

Past Perfect Continuous
Nadruk ligt op tijdsduur en het is in het verleden gebeurd.

- had + been + ww + ing

I had been waiting when my mom finally came home.
We had been trying to open the door for hours when she finally found the key.
