Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson you will accurately identify, convert, and use active and passive voice, as well as reported speech, in CBSE English grammar for Grade 11.
What is Voice in English?
The subject receives the action. Example: Dinner was cooked by the chef.
Passive Voice
Active Voice
The subject performs the action. Example: The chef cooked dinner.
When to Use Active or Passive Voice
Active voice is clear and direct. Use passive voice to emphasise the action or when the doer is unknown or unimportant.
Rules for Changing Active to Passive
Identify the object and make it the subject, use the correct form of 'to be' with the past participle, and include 'by' if needed.
Example: Changing Voice
Active: She writes a letter. Passive: A letter is written by her.
Common Errors with Voice
Watch out for mismatched tenses, missing 'by' phrases, or awkward forms. Always check the meaning after conversion.

What is Reported Speech?
Reported speech tells what someone else said, using your own words and correct tense changes.
Direct vs Indirect Speech
Direct: "I am going home," he said. Indirect: He said that he was going home.
Tense Changes in Reported Speech
Present becomes past; will becomes would; am/is/are becomes was/were. Example: "I eat" → He said he ate.
Reporting Statements & Questions
Statements
"She is happy" → She said that she was happy.
Questions
"Are you coming?" → He asked if I was coming.
Reporting Commands & Requests
Commands: Use 'told' + 'to' infinitive. Requests: Use 'asked' + 'to'. "Sit down," she said → She told me to sit down.
Reported Speech: Common Mistakes
Do not forget to change pronouns, time expressions, and tenses. Check for clarity and reported connectors.
