Phrasal Verbs
- Phrasal Verbs = combination of a verb and a preposition 
- in, on, up, away, by, about, over, around, out, off, down, back, 
   through, along, forward

- Sometimes the meaning is as clear as day: "get on", "drive off", "come back"
- Sometimes it is not as much: "lay off" (ontslaan), "keep up" (volhouden)
- Will post a list of the most common phrasal verbs in Teams

Gerund or infinitive
The gerund is a form of a verb used as a noun 
Gerund = verb+ing 
The infinitive is the verb with to
infinitive= to +verb

When do we use the Gerund?
a When it is a subject:   Swimming is fun
b After prepositions (about, in, off, at, of, without, by, before):
   He left without paying
c After certain expressions (it's no use, it's no good, can't help, can’t stand)
   It's no use arguing
d After the following verbs  - give up, go on, mind, fancy, finish, quit, suggest, 
I quit playing that game.
f After the following verbs that express how you feel about something- and when the activitiy is done on a regular basis: like, hate, enjoy, love, remember, prefer, start, continue, keep, begin and stop
I enjoy swimming

to-infinitive
In all other case you use the infinitive  (to + verb) after the following verbs: like, hate, enjoy, love, remember, prefer, start, continue, keep, begin en stop:
I would love to swim.
He hates to tell you it won't happen.

The Verb: Remember

The verb remember is a special case:
If you use the gerund after the verb remember you refer to the past: remember fishing on the lake, those were good times. 

If you use the infinitive after the verb remember you are referring to something that still needs to take place: 
Remember to walk the dog when you get home.






  I clearly remember telling him this.
