An Introduction:

What do you remember about the start of WW1?

Recruiting soldiers

• expectation of a short war

thought to be over by Christmas

• positivity because of patriotism and nationalism

parades and marches

• in 1914 and 1915 many men volunteered, afterwards more force was used (propaganda and conscription)
• no quick victory, emotions changed

also, men were sent back to war after treatment of their wounds

1. How would you define patriotism? What actions does the word entail? Would you consider yourself patriotic?

2. What would it take for you to fight for your country? What things might influence you? If you think you would never fight for you country, explain why.

3. How did the military posters we viewed today portray the experience of joining the military? 

4. Do we see messages like this today? Explain your answer.
