Slide 6 - Sleepvraag

Difference between melody and rhythm
Melody
High and low tones played after each other.
The hight on the note stave tells us how high the note is. The higher it is written, the higher the tone is.

Rhythm
Long and short notes played after each other.
The look or appearance of a note tells us how long or short we should play a note. A note can be black, transparant, with or without a stick.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Rhythm: long and short notes
Remember Ici? We also played long and short notes. We had learned that the short notes were black and the long notes were transparant.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Rhythm: long and short notes
But how long does a note last exactly? How do you know how long or how short a note should be played?

We count the beats of the note.

Example:
A black note with a stick lasts 1 beat
The rhythm name of this note is a quarter note
So, we say: A quarter note lasts 1 beat

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Rhythm: long and short notes
Another example is the half note. This note is transparant and lasts two beats.

                  Quarter note
                  1 beat

                  Half note
                  2 beats

Rhythm: measures
To organise all these beats, we write notes in blocks of (usually) four beats.
These blocks are called measures.

You can also have 3 beats in a measure or 6 or even 12!
But we well mostly be working with 4 beats per measure.

                  Quarter note
                  1 beat

                  Half note
                  2 beats
