Lesson 2: Skincare
Writing an article

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Learning objectives
  • Evaluate if a sentence is well-constructed or if it needs proofreading
  • Identify what is needed for an article and plan ideas using the question scenario
  • Draft and proofread an article

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

What makes a well-constructed sentence?
  • Begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (not a comma)
  • Contains a subject and verb e.g. "There are many reasons why..." "Other possible reasons include...."
  • Makes sense
  • Remember: sentences in writing tend to be shorter than when we speak.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Task 1
In pairs/threes, review the cards.
Which sentences are well-constructed and which sentences need further proofreading? Discuss why.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Look out for these common errors
  • Sentences that are too long (too many ideas  incorporated into the one sentence)
  • Comma splicing (attempting to end a sentence with a comma instead of a full stop)
  • No sentence boundaries (no full stops in between sentences)
  • Repeating conjunctions within the one sentence e.g. using 'as', 'and', 'so' more than once.
