Who was Eise Eisinga?
The father of Eise was wolkammer (woolcomber). If you father was woolcomber you could go to school untill you were 12. After that you would have to learn to be a woolcomber.
Een wolkammer kreeg de wol van de schapen binnen en waste, kamde en verfde de wol. Daarna konden mensen het spinnen en de draden gebruiken om er kleding van te maken.

Bit Eise was very smart and his parents knew that. So once a week he could walk to Franeker to get lessons in Maths and Astronomie.

Eise made a lot of notes during his lessons.
Hier zie je wiskunde-aantekeningen. Eise moest een heleboel sommetjes maken.

Because his father was only a wollcomber, Eise could not go to university.
Wolkammers kamden niet alleen wol, maar verfden dit ook. Hier zie je een brief van Eise waarin hij wol in verschillende kleuren meestuurt voor een wedstrijd.
In 1786 Eise married and together with his wife Pietje he moved to Franeker, where he started his won wollcombery.

Eise can not study astrology but he works on it in his spare time.
In 1774 Eise comes up with the idea to build a planetarium in his living room.

A planetarium is a build model of the sun and the planets and is used to explain how these move towards each other.
Een Planetarium zag er vroeger vaak zo uit. In het midden zie je de zon, met op verschillende afstanden de planeten eromheen. Eise maakte naast dit planetarium op de foto nog een planetarium, maar dan eentje in zijn plafond!

To build the Planetarium Eise lowers his ceiling in his livingroom and installs a gearwork. the gearworks consist of 60 wooden gears with iron pins.

It takes six years to design and build the planetarium. it takes another year to paint it. in 1781 the planetarium is finished.

The Planetarium is so special it is immediately famous. People travel from different countries to come and see it. And even king Willem I visits Eise's livingroom.
