Completing a consultation

What is the purpose of a consultation?

Why do we do a consultation?

We do a consultation to:

Identify client requirements (what the clients want to have done)

To check the condition of the hair

To help decide what products, tools and equipment to use

To check for any issues (cuts, scalp conditions, infections or infestations)

Candidate name: YOUR name

Client number: Your clients details

To work out the client number you need to find out the following-

First 3 letters of the clients SURNAME

First letter of their FIRST NAME

Day of their date of birth

E.G. Emma Whittle 25/06/83

WHIE25

Requested service: What you are doing today

Units for assessment: What you want to be assessed on

You also need to remember to record the start and end time of each service

You need to complete this section for EVERY client.

This will help you to choose your products, tools and equipment.

ELASTICITY TEST: Checking the internal strength of the hair

POROSITY TEST: Checking the external layer of hair to see how porous it is.

You only need to fill out the relevant sections.

For example, if you are doing a hair up, you DO NOT need to fill out the shampoo or colouring sections.

Face shapes

How to identify face shapes

You can also use your hand to help identify face shapes

Hand touches cheeks first- possible round or heart face

Hands touch forehead first- Possible oval or long

Hands touch jaw first- Possible square face shape

In pairs you will now complete a client consultation on each other.

Please go and stand at your station.

Shampoo and conditioningUnit 003

What are the 4 massage techniques we use in hairdressing?

Effleurage

Petrissage

Rotary

Friction

Effleurage

WHEN IS IT USED:

During shampooing and conditioning.

HOW TO PREFORM:

Effleurage massage is a gentle stroking movement. It is used to apply and distribute shampoo and conditioner to the hair.

Rotary

  • WHEN IS IT USED:During shampooing

  • HOW TO PREFORM:

  • Rotary is a firm, fast circular movement using the pads of fingers over the scalp.

  • BENEFIT TO CLIENT:

  • Stimulates the blood supply to the scalp, relaxing.

Friction

  • WHEN IS IT USED:

  •  During shampooing

  • HOW TO PREFORM:

  • Friction is a vigorous rubbing movement using the finger pads. It is only done for a few minutes working from the front to back of the head.

  • REASON FOR USE AND BENEFITS:

  • Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow because of the quick, firm movements. Only carried out on dry scalps.

  • Must not be used on clients with oily scalps!!!!!!!

Petrissage

  • WHEN IS IT USED:

  • During conditioning

  • HOW TO PREFORM:

  • Petrissage is a slow, firm, deep, circular kneading movement. The idea of the massage is to move the scalp, not your hands. Not to be used on oily scalps.

  • REASONS AND BENEFITS:

  • Relaxing end to the shampoo and conditioning service. Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow.

Purpose and benefit of head massage in shampoo and conditioning

  • As shown in the previous slides, head massage stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow.

  • Head massage also stimulates and tones the underlying tissues (e.g. skin and muscle) and stimulates the nerves.

  • Increased blood flow helps with growth of hair, as it is needed to produce new hair (remember back to the cross section of the skin structure.

Sectioning the hair

When we carry out most hairdressing services we section the hair into 4 sections.

These can be known as:

Quarters

Fours

Quadrants

They used to be referred to as a “hot cross bun” sectioning pattern, but this term is rarely used now
