What is Artificial Intelligence?

"Artificial intelligence is when a computer system can do tasks that usually need human intelligence, such as learning, making decisions or recognising patterns."


Think of AI like a digital apprentice that watches, learns, and improves at its job over time.

Key characteristics of AI systems:

Sensing

Uses cameras, microphones, or sensors to gather data from the environment

Deciding

Makes choices based on data and patterns it has learned

Learning

Improves performance over time through experience

Three Types of Artificial Intelligence



Narrow AI (Weak AI)

Very good at ONE specific task. This is the only type that exists today. Examples: Siri, spam filters, chatbots, recommendation systems, facial recognition.



General AI

As smart as a human across MANY tasks. Could learn and apply knowledge to different problems. Does not exist yet – still in research.



Strong AI (Super AI)

More intelligent than humans in MANY areas. Would surpass human capabilities. Currently science fiction – think of films like Ex Machina or Her.

Real-World Examples of Narrow AI

Voice Assistants

Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant use speech recognition and natural language processing to understand commands and improve over time.

Recommendation Systems

Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube analyse your viewing habits to suggest content you might enjoy.

Spam Filters

Email services learn to identify spam patterns and block unwanted messages more effectively over time.

Facial Recognition

Used in phone unlocking, security systems, and social media tagging – learns to identify faces accurately.

Race to be the AI Experts! AI or Not? You Decide

Work in pairs or groups of three. You are competing against other teams! Use your worksheet to decide whether each item uses AI, and justify your answer briefly.

Points System: Earn 1 point for each correct answer. An additional 1 bonus point will be awarded for the best justification on each item (decided by the instructor). Track your team's score!
