Zero conditional

  • To talk about situations that are generally or always true. Scientific facts.
    If you don’t water plants, they die.
    If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.

How do I make it?
If + present simple, present simple.

First conditional
  • To talk about possible and probable situations in the future and their consequences.
    If you eat junk food, you will put on weight.
    If it rains, I won’t go to the park today.

How do I make it?
If + present simple, will + infinitive
[If I study today, I will go to the party tonight.]

Second conditional
  • To talk about imaginary or improbable (onwaarschijnlijk) situations in the present or future and their consequences.
    If I had a beard, I would look older.
    If I met the Queen of England, I would shake her hand.

How do I make it?
If + past simple, … would/wouldn’t + infinitive
[If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house]

Third conditional
  • To talk about imaginary or impossible (onmogelijk) situations in the past and their consequences. The situations are impossible because we cannot change them now that they have happened.
    If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.
    If we would have taken the taxi, we wouldn’t have missed the plane.

How do I make it?
If + past perfect, … would/wouldn’t have + past participle
[She wouldn’t have been tired if she had gone to be early]
