What are tag questions?

On the first page you read several sentences. 

Tag questions turn statements into questions.

English is easy. (statement)

English is easy, isn't it ? (question)


The short subsentence is called a tag question

How to use a tag question?

A tag question consists of a verb and a pronoun

Sometimes you also use the word 'not' in the tag question.


He isn't smart, is he? (tag = verb + pronoun)

Which pronoun?

Repeat the pronoun that is used in the statement. 

If a name is used, choose the correct pronoun.


We are happy, aren't we?

Jim isn't at school, is he?

The girls love swimming, don't they?

Rule 1: If the statement is positive, the tag question is negative.

  1. I like cats, don't I?
  2. Jim is 15, isn't he?

Rule 2

If the statement is negative, the tag question is positive.

  1. John doesn't enjoy flying, does he?
  2. English isn't difficult, is it?

Summary

Tag questions are used to turn statements into questions.

  1. Repeat the form of 'to be' or 'can'
  2. Other verbs, add a form of 'to do'
  3. Choose the correct pronoun (you, I, she, it, they...)
  4. Positive statement = negative tag question
  5. Negative statement = positive tag question

Bij de werkwoorden to be, have, of hulpwerkwoord zoals can worden vooraan de zin gezet met daarachter not.

  • Isn't/aren't/wasn't/weren't
  • Haven't/hasn't/hadn't
  • Can't/couldn't

In alle andere gevallen maak je een zin met don't/doesn't/didn't

  • I visited the grand canyon.
  • Didn't you visit the grand canyon?

  • They have tickets for the concert.
  • Don't they have tickets for the concert.
