General rule

We use some for affirmative sentences.​

We use any in questions.​

We use any in negative sentences.​



Their compounds (so someone/anyone/somewhere/anybody/etc.) follow the same rules.

We always use some in affirmative sentences.​



Examples:​

He bought some flowers for me!​

I left my keys somewhere.
We use some in question sentences when we suspect the answer to be 'yes'.​



Examples:​

May I have some sugar, please?​

Would you like something to eat?

We mostly use any in question sentences.​



Examples:​

Have you bought anything else?​

Have you got any luggage?
We always use any in negative sentences.​



Examples:​

I didn't see anybody.

I haven't done anything wrong.

After the word 'if' we use any.



Examples:​

If there are any letters, could you let me know?​
Let me know if you need anything.
We use any when we mean 'doesn't matter which'.​



Examples:​

Any song will do. I don't mind which.​

You could take any bus as they all go to the city centre.

Example: ​

None:

None = not a/not any​

No noun follows or use none of​



Example:​

All the tickets have been sold, none are left./none of them are left.

Not anything = nothing etc.​



Example:​

I said nothing.

There's nobody living here.
Difference:

When using any (or compounds) and no (or compounds) there's a difference in meaning.​



There was no bus.​

You can take any bus (all of them, doesn't matter which).
