motives:
  1. French revolution (equality and freedom!)
  2. Christianity (God created everyone equally)

This didn't lead to abolishment and better conditions because:
  • first there was just abolishment of the trade in slaves 
  • freed slaves still had terrible working conditions and were paid too little

Slavery in the US
The southern states of the US heavily depended on slavery and plantations. These states didn't want to abolish slavery.
-> Effect: Civil War between the southern and northern states. 
The North won this and emancipation started.

Keti Koti
The Netherlands was one of the last countries to abolish slavery, in 1863.
In Suriname and the Antilles, people still celebrate that with Keti Koti.

In America, they celebrate Juneteenth.
