At the end of the lesson you will be able to identify key physical properties of materials and explain their significance in selecting and using materials in engineering.
Physical vs. Functional Properties
These include hardness, density, melting point, and ductility. They describe the behaviour of a material under various conditions.

These are properties that affect how a material performs in service, like corrosion resistance, weldability, or recyclability.
Thermal Conductivity & Insulation
Thermal conductivity describes how well heat passes through a material. Materials with low thermal conductivity are good insulators.
Corrosion Resistance Explained
Corrosion resistance is the ability to withstand chemical or electrochemical attack, often measured as millimetres of penetration per year.
Density and Melting Point
Measured as mass per unit volume. Symbol: ρ. High density materials feel heavier for their size.
Temperature at which solid and liquid phases are in equilibrium – temperature stays constant during the phase change.

Heat Capacity & Thermal Expansion
Specific heat capacity is the heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg by 1°C. Thermal expansion describes the fractional increase in size with temperature.
Hardenability & Weldability
Hardenability refers to steel’s ability to form martensite to a certain depth. Weldability, also called joinability, reflects how easily a material can be welded together.
Other Essential Properties
Indicates a material’s capacity to be reused, remanufactured, or recovered at end of life.
Permittivity measures how much electrical potential energy a material can store when exposed to an electric field.
