Reading strategies 

and 

some advice

Learning objectives

By the end of this lesson:

1. You will have revised some basic reading strategies.

2. You will have learnt specific exam strategies related to each type of question.

3. You will have practised said strategies.

Algemene tips:

• Je mag op je opgaven en in de teksten schrijven/markeren. Doe dit! Het helpt je om gerichter te lezen.
• Je hebt ongeveer 3 minuten per punt.
• Je hoeft het examen niet in chronologische volgorde te maken. Begin met de teksten die je het meeste aanspreken/ waar je de meeste punten verwacht te halen. Zorg er wel voor dat je alles (bij de juiste vraagnummers) invult.
• Wees zuinig met woorden opzoeken in het woordenboek. Schrijf de woorden die je opzoekt op in de kantlijn.
• Zorg dat je in ieder geval altijd titels, ondertitels en tussenkopjes begrijpt. Hetzelfde geldt voor de vragen  + de (korte) antwoordmogelijkheden.

• Open vraag > In het Nederlands beantwoorden!

• Geef exact aantal voorbeelden dat gevraagd wordt
  
• Examen is opgebouwd in moeilijkheidsgraad
  
• Sla je tekst (toch) over? Altijd controleren of je overal antwoord hebt ingevuld!

DIFFICULT WORDS? Woordenboek alleen als ‘t ECHT nodig is!

> Bij multiple-choice: Antwoord-opties staan in alfabetische volgorde zodat je makkelijker kan zoeken.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS

• Gesloten vragen: multiple choice (abcd) and "gap questions"
• Waar / niet waar. Beweringen vragen (leveren relatief weinig punten op)
• Open vragen -> in het Nederlands beantwoorden, tenzij anders aangegeven.
• Open vragen: Zo ja / zo nee.
• Citeervragen
• Precies het aantal voorbeelden geven dat gevraagd wordt. Nooit meer!

DO YOU REMEMBER SOME OF THE BASIC READING STRATEGIES?

BASIC STEPS

• Read the title and look at the photos > predict what the text is going to be about.
• Skim through the text to get the main idea and recognise the type of text (letter, article, blog,...?
• Read the question and possible answers and underline the key words.
• Scan the text trying to find synonyms, antonyms or similar phrases. Read only that fragment as many times as necessary.
• The first and last sentence of a paragraph will give you information about the topic of that paragraph.

Multiple choice questions

1. Read the question and possible answers. Underline key words. Pay attention to time expressions, quantities, adjectives, etc
2. Read the paragraph, highlight linking words and signal words.
3. Scan the text looking for the key words.
4. The answer is very often near a linker or a quote.
   
5. Forget about clearly wrong answers. Focus on the 2 most likely possibilities. 50% chance.
6. When asked about intentions, make sure you understand the words!

Open questions

1. Read the question carefully. What is it asking? An example, a contrast, a conclusion, ...?

2. Find signal words which introduce an opinion, an explanation, a consequence, etc.

3. Answer what they are asking: a quote, an example? ANSWER IN DUTCH! NEVER IN ENGLISH, UNLESS ASKED.

4. Be brief! Don't add unnecessary info!

• There are 2 types: 

1. A word, a sentence or a linker is missing.

2. Add a title or headings to a text

• In both cases, skim through the text first.
• Then, read the paragraph carefully. Identify the topic and the tone.

If a word or a linker is missing:

• Read the sentences BEFORE AND AFTER the gap carefully. Analyse how they are linked (contrast, explanation, examples,...)
• Try different possibilities. The end result needs to be grammatical.
• Last resource: Look up the words in a dictionary if necessary.

If a heading or a sentence is missing:

• Read the text and summarise each paragraph in 2 or 3 words. The first and last sentence of the paragraph will help you.
• Make sure you understand the sentence/title. Highlight the key words.
• Scan the text. Find the key words and link them to the topic of the paragraph/ text.
• Read the sentences BEFORE AND AFTER carefully. How are they linked?
• Choose the option that makes sense. It needs to be grammatical.

Check out the verbs in questions 8-22-28 and make sure you understand them:

criticise/ illustrate/point out/question/explain/ justify/look from a different perspective/ridicule/counterbalance/give anecdotal evidence/...

=> Make a list in your notebook and write their definitions or translations

Vakspecifieke regels

1 Open vragen dienen in het Nederlands beantwoord te worden, tenzij uit de vraagstelling blijkt dat het antwoord in de vreemde taal mag of moet staan. Indien toch de vreemde taal is gebruikt, worden aan het antwoord 0 scorepunten toegekend.

2 Met taalfouten wordt in de beoordeling geen rekening gehouden.
