After the first lesson, Leo reached into the side pocket of his backpack. It was empty. He checked the other pocket. Then the front zip. Nothing.
His throat already felt dry from running around before school.
He closed his eyes for a second and pictured his morning. Toast. Brushing teeth. Packing his bag. Then he remembered setting something down when he tied his shoelaces.
During independent reading time, Leo quietly raised his hand and spoke to his teacher. A few minutes later, he was walking to the office. Soon, he was back in class with something cold in his hand and a small, relieved smile on his face.
