What Is the Verb TO BE?

TO BE is one of the most important verbs in English. It helps describe people, places, and things.

The Forms: am, is, are

"am" is used with I. "is" is used with he, she, it, or one person/thing. "are" is used with you, we, they, or more than one.

Using TO BE for Feelings

Examples: I am happy. She is tired. They are excited.

Using TO BE for Locations

Examples: He is at home. We are in the park. You are at school.

Using TO BE for Age

Examples: I am 20 years old. She is 17. They are 10 years old.

Using TO BE for People

Examples: He is my brother. We are friends. You are the teacher.

Using TO BE for Objects

Examples: It is a book. They are pencils. This is a desk.
