Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Planning for today + learning goals
  • Lookback 3.1 (5 min)
  • 3.2 the circulatory system (15 min)
  • Practice 3.2 (15 min)

Learning goals:
  1. You can distinguish between the pulmonary and systemic circulation.
  2. You can name three types of blood vessels with their features and functions.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Which part of the blood makes pathogens harmless?
One of the substances that tobacco smoke contains is carbon monoxide. In the blood, carbon monoxide takes up the sites where oxygen is normally held.
When skin is damaged, it clots the blood to form a

Circulation
The human circulatory system:
 heart + blood vessels

The path taken through the body by the blood is called circulation.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

-Red blood indicates oxygen-rich blood.
-Blue blood indicates oxygen-poor blood.

(Not really blue in real life)

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

The heart
-The heart is a double pump

-right side pumps oxygen-poor
  blood to the lungs.

-left side pumps oxygen-rich
blood into the rest of the body.
Right side
Left side

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

2 different circulations:

Humans have a double circulatory system: blood flows through the heart 2 times per circuit.

Left side
Right side

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Pulmonary circulation
Right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs. (Oxygen poor)

Here the blood picks up Oxygen and drops of Carbon dioxide.
--> blood goes to left side of the heart (Oxygen rich)

Left side

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Systemic circulation
Left side of the heart pumps blood to every part of your body. (Oxygen rich)

Drops off: oxygen and nutrients to cells

Picks up: Carbon dioxide and other waste products from cells

Blood goes back to right side of the heart (Oxygen poor)

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Bloodvessels
3 types of blood vessels:
  • Arteries,
  • Capilleries,
  • Veins.

The heart pumps blood through the blood vessels.

The names are often based on the organ they come from or go to.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Slide 11 - Video

Arteries

Transports blood away from the heart

Oxygen-rich blood

Thick walls

Usually deep in the body
Veins

Transports blood to the heart

Oxygen-poor blood

Thinner walls

Valves

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

valves

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

capillaries

Network of capillaries in all organs

Much thinner than a hair.
capillaries

Walls only one cell layer

Only here substances can travel through the wall (gas Exchange)

White blood cells

Slide 14 - Tekstslide
