Unravelling Fractions: Understanding Parts of a Whole
Unravelling Fractions: Understanding Parts of a Whole
What do you already know about fractions?
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson you will be able to explain what fractions are, recognise and write common fractions, and use them to solve simple problems.
What Is a Fraction?
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written with a top number (numerator) and a bottom number (denominator) separated by a line.
Numerator and Denominator
The numerator shows how many parts you have. The denominator shows how many parts the whole is divided into. For example, in 2/5, 2 is the numerator and 5 is the denominator.
Fractions in Real Life
Fractions are everywhere! For example, when a pizza is cut into 8 slices and you eat 3, you’ve eaten 3/8 of the pizza.
Proper and Improper Fractions
The numerator is less than the denominator. Example: 3/4.
Proper Fractions
The numerator is equal to or more than the denominator. Example: 5/3.
Improper Fractions
Equivalent Fractions
Different fractions can represent the same value. For example, 1/2 is the same as 2/4 or 4/8.
