Slavery has existed since the beginning of history.
In the 17th century governments were still
trading slaves.
But during the Englightenment ideaslike
human rights, freedom & equality were introduced.

Slavery: A system in which people own, buy and sell other people as property.
In African slave trade, slaves were bought or captured by Arab or African slavetraders. European started to buy these slaves around 1500.

After the time of discovery and conquerers colonists started big plantations in America.
They grew coffee, cacao, sugar, tabacco etc.
First native Americans were used as slaves. But they got sick from the new bacteria from the Europeans and became too weak.

Because of the shortage of workers the plantation owners turned to the African slave trade.
African slaves were sold like cattle.
It was dehumanising.

Revolt?
Owners of slaves had very strict rules
and corporal punishments (lijfstraffen) that sometimes resulted in death.
This stopped most slaves from rebelling against their masters.

The end of slavery
Some religious groups and Enlightenment philosophers believed all humans were created equal and should be treated equally. These ideas started a movement to end slavery: abolitionism.
19th century: slave trade became illegal countries.
