2. Set up the artists
Everyone else gets a blank sheet of paper

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Drawing by description
3. Describe the picture:
- the describer explains the picture in detail without saying what it is (e.g., 'don't say: it is a cat,' but describe its shape, positions and details).
Use clear, step-by-step instructions, like:
- draw a large circle in the middle of the page
- inside the circle, draw two similar ovals near the top etc.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Drawing by description
4. No peeking or questions
- The artists cannot see the original image.
- They can ask for clarifications (e.g., is the shape tall or wide), but the describer should not directly say what it is.
5. Compare drawing
- Once everyone is finished reveal the original image.
- Compare the drawings to see how close you came.

Modals
These verbs are never alone, they are always supporting another verb and they say something about obligation, necessity and permission.

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

Explanation modals
Modals are short for modal auxiliaries (Dutch: hulpwerkwoorden van modaliteit). Modals can express obligation (Dutch: verplichting), necessity (Dutch: noodzaak) or permission (Dutch: toestemming).

Slide 31 - Tekstslide

Modal verbs are a bit different:

  • They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"...
  • They are always followed by an infinitive without "to" (e.i. the bare infinitive.)
  • They are used to indicate modality (see previous slide)
