Define: main clause, subordinating clause and conjunction.

  • "I stayed home because it was raining."

  • Main clause = a complete sentence. It has a subject and a verb, and it expresses a full idea. It can stand alone.

  • Subordinate clause = adds extra information but cannot stand alone. It depends on a main clause to make sense.

  • Conjunction = a word that connects parts of a sentence. It links clauses, phrases, or words together to show how ideas relate to each other.

Clauses, conjunctions, and connectors


There are three main types of conjunctions:

1. Coordinating conjunctions: they connect two main clauses (equal ideas).
Common ones: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so > remember them with the acronym FANBOYS.

Example: “I wanted to go out, but it was raining.”


2. Subordinating conjunctions: they connect a subordinate clause (extra info) to a main clause.
They show relationships like time, reason, contrast, or condition.
Common ones: because, although, when, if, since, while, unless

Example: “Although it was raining, we went out.”


3. Linking words (connectors): these are not part of the sentence grammar but help connect ideas or sentences. They often start a new sentence and are followed by a comma: however, therefore, in addition, on the other hand
