Can be a difficult topic.
However, if you understand why it is used and you follow a few steps, you'll be fine.

Reporting verbs
You can start your reported speech/thought with a variety of verbs:
I thought I...
She said that...
He asked ...

They can change the tone/purpose of the sentence.
