Figurative Language Lesson

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

What is figurative language
- Descriptions: people, places, things, emotions, etc
- Way to add "music" to your writing
- Makes everything more vivid to the reader
- Don't need fancy language - just a bit of creativity!

eg. I am so hungry I could eat a horse!
eg. The fluffy furby fell on his face and was left feeling furious!

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Write your homework descriptions here

HOW? Through adjectives, adverbs and literary devices = imagery, creating images in the minds of readers through language use.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

What literary devices do you already know? (think about your Dutch lessons...)

Slide 5 - Woordweb

Slide 6 - Video

Some devices you can use
Metaphor - comparison
Simile - comparison with like or as
Oxymoron - contradictory ideas as one idea (ex. burning snow)
Personification - giving human qualities to something non-human
Alliteration - repetition of sounds
Hyperbole - exaggeration
Onomatopoeia - imitations of sound
There are MANY more, but let's start here!

His heart is a block of ice
Your bag is as heavy as a rock
I remember those pink and purple passionfruit popsicles
The rain went pitter-patter on the window
That's an open secret
Everyone knows that!
The cup danced joyfully across the table

Slide 8 - Sleepvraag

So how do you add this type of imagery?
Don't make it too complicated!
1. Imagine what you see, hear, feel, taste, etc
2. Write down what that is like literally
3. Now get creative - what can you compare it to?
4. Look at your verbs - jazz them up!
5. A dictionary/thesaurus is your best friend! (yes you may use them during the GPW)

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Let's try it out
- Random stock photo (I googled "weird stock photos"....)
- Take a few moments to look at it
- Write down what you see
- In the answer box, give a short description using at least 3 of the devices we discussed!

In your GIFT narrative, use each device at least once!!!!!
You can improve your grade if you use all of these and then some!
TASK:
Re-write gift narrative, 500-600 words, incl.
story-arc, message, dialogue, characterization
