Expressing a wish, a regret, or to complain


There are three distinct types of I wish / if only sentences:
1. Wish, wanting change for the present or future with the simple past.
2. Regret with the past perfect.
3. Complaints with would + verb.

Expressing a wish
Form:
If only / I wish + simple past (example: worked/was/gave)
Example: If only I knew how to use a computer. (I don’t know how to use a computer and I would like to learn how to use it)

Use:
• To express a wish in the present or in the future.
• The simple past here is an unreal past.
• When you use the verb to be the form is “were”.

Example: I wish I were a millionaire!

Expressing regret
Form:
If only / I wish + past perfect (example: had worked/had been/had given)
Example:
If only I had woken up early. (I didn't wake up early and I missed my bus.)

Use:
• To express a regret.
• The action is past.

Complaining
Form:
I wish / if only + would + verb (example: would work/would be/would give)
Example: I wish you wouldn't arrive so late all the time (I'm annoyed because you always come late and I want you to arrive on time)

Use:
• To complain about a behaviour that you disapprove.
• Expressing impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present action.

Hope vs Wish
I hope & I wish are often confused in English. Keep the following in mind:

  • Hope usually takes a present tense and speaks of the future. In this case, we don't know or can't tell the outcome: I hope my flight arrives on time or I will miss the last train.
  • Wish does know the facts and they are often the opposite of what want (we want them to be different, but they are not): I wish my flight arrived on time. Now I've missed the last train.

As if/as though (alsof)
We use as if and as though with a past tense to talk about an imaginary situation or a situation that may not be true but that is likely or possible. 
As if is more common than as though, but they have the same meaning:
  • He looks as if he knew the answer. (he gives the impression that he knows the answer, but he (probably) doesn't know or we don't know whether he knows or not)
  • He seems as if he hadn't slept for days. (it seems that he hasn't slept for days, but he (probably) has or we don't know whether he has or not)

Do exercises 1-6. Keep the rules in mind and read carefully what you have to do for each exercise. Don't forget to do the Corpus Spot as well. 

Exercise 6 is a Use of English exercise. You need to use the word given to change the first sentence into one with the same meaning. Use up to 5 words. See the video for help. She gives you a great way to tackle this!
