Discuss in pairs of two

The lion that had fought against his brother was alienated by his pride. He wasn't welcome anywhere and he had to spend the rest of his living days in exile.

Using context

This is actually something most people automatically do. It's called 'deduction' (when you look at a word that you don't know, you automatically start looking for cues (aanwijzingen) that help you find the meaning of the word...  Let's put the aforementioned words into sentences. 

I was exasperated after sitting next to that crying baby on my flight to Vancouver for 8 hours straight.

Electric mopeds are a common sight in city centres nowadays. You can say they are ubiqituous.

Tips when coming across unknown words

*Sometimes You cannot guess the meaning of the word by looking at the context.

*You are allowed to use a dictionary: ( pay attention to:)

-Zelfstandig naamwoord: 'the', 'a', 'an' staat er dan voor..

-Werkwoord:  eindigt dan op een + ed (vexed = v.t. van 'to vex') Je zult dan 'vex' zien staan in het woordenboek en de verleden tijd (vexed).   Bij de zelfst. naamw'en hoef je niet op de stam te letten. 

Answering MC questions

Geheim van de smid: "Een Multiple Choice vraag die uit 4 antwoordmogelijkheid bestaat, bestaat uit 2 antwoordmogelijkheden die onzin zijn. Die vaak nergens op slaan zelfs. Daarnaast heb je één antwoord dat altijd lijkt op het goede antwoord. Eén  is uiteraard het juiste antwoord."

Life is a beach

A venture company in Tokyo transformed its workplace into a beach to lure employees, visitors, and potential clients into believing that life can be a beach at work.

There is the sound of waves and the crunch of sand beneath your feet. These are not the sensations that you expect to have at the office!

By using a carpet of sand, speakers, and a 3D projector, the firm made a tropical beach in the reception area that it also uses as an employee meeting space and staff lounge. One employee said that the sound of the waves soothed her and helped her work. Others who used the space joked that they feel like they have already gone off on holiday.

Hoe reageerden de werknemers (employees) op de maatregel om van de receptie een 'strand' te maken?

1. Ze vonden het niet genoeg. Ze wilden meer aanpassingen.
2. Ze ervoeren het alsof ze op vakantie waren. Eén werknemer vond het wel afleidend werken.
3. Ze ervoeren het alsof ze op vakantie waren en één werknemer vond het rustgevend.
4. Ze vonden de aanpassingen niet rustgevend genoeg.

Affordable Night Trains 

he launch of a new affordable night train service from Brussels to Berlin by European Sleeper could have a big impact on rail travel in Europe.

The success of this train service will be very important for other planned night train routes and it will influence the EU’s ability to reduce carbon emissions. More and more people are looking for sustainable travel and an alternative to budget airlines, and the Brussels-Berlin service wants to offer this. The first reaction was positive but there are problems with financing and getting modern trains. Hopefully, there will be demand for night train services and it will support night train travel in Europe.

Wat zijn de redenen dat mensen graag de nachttrein willen nemen?

Goed: Ze willen graag de nachttrein nemen omdat meer mensen duurzamer willen reizen en  omdat het een alternatief is voor de budgetvluchten. 

Slecht: Ze willen graag de nachttrein nemen omdat het duurzamer is en een alternatief. 

*Wees zo volledig mogelijk: Beter tot in detail uitgelegd en een punt verdiend, dan te algemeen en geen punt verdiend (doe alsof de beoordelaar heel erg dom is);
