Planning  I  Friday the 23rd of May
- Disabilities

Goals: By the end of today, you will be able to apply problem-solving skills and use the English language effectively to propose one or more solutions to complex problems.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Which public facilities or institutional buildings could be challenging or conflicting for disabled people?

Slide 4 - Video

Problem solving
- What problems could a deaf person experience due to their inability to hear sounds?
- What problems could a blind person experience due to their inability to see?

What kinds of solutions can you think of to make the life of a disabled person in prison more manageable? (e.g. deaf, blind, etc.)

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Example
Inmates with a hearing disability are not safe in prison. For example, deaf inmates may be unable to hear alarm bells during emergencies, putting them at significant risk. Our policy is to ensure the safety of all inmates. Therefore, I argue that we must develop an alternative solution to guarantee the safety of every individual in our care. I suggest that we implement/install the following policy/equipment to address this issue.
.....

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

example complications for deaf people
- Cannot communicate with staff or other inmates.
- During a lockdown if guards yell instructions or give warnings, deaf inmates might not hear it.
- Medical visits might be distressing.
- Difficulty attending therapy classes.
- Family and friends can't call the inmates.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

example complications for blind inmates
- Cannot communicate with staff or other inmates.
- Inmates might bump into people or equipment because there are no guide paths or warnings.
- Inmates can't see what food is being served in the cafeteria.
- Inmates might not be able to tell if their clothes are inside-out, mismatched, or dirty.
- Canes might be confiscated if staff are not properly informed.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

example solutions for deaf people
- Ensure interpreters are available.
- Install videophones.
- Ensure that deaf individuals have paper, pens, and access to tablets or computers.
- Use flashing lights alongside sirens for emergency alerts.
- Use visual signs or symbols to indicate time for meals or yard time.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

example solutions for blind people
- Provide  simple 3D-printed layouts of the building.
- Provide audio versions of handbooks, policies, and educational content.
- Allow access to text-to-speech software. (TextAid)
- Pair blind inmates with a “buddy system”

- Reply to what your speaking partner says, it's a conversation not a monologue.
- Avoid talking about things you have no idea about it.

If you want to excel:
- Ask your speaking partner questions, (e.g. What do you think? What is your opinion about this?)
