The Organs of the Digestive System
Main Organs
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
Teeth, salivary glands, liver, pancreas, gall bladder.
Accessory Organs
What Happens in the Mouth?
Mechanical digestion by teeth breaks food down. Saliva from glands starts chemical digestion of starch.
The Stomach: Breaking Down Food
The stomach uses acid and enzymes to break food into smaller molecules. Churning helps mix food and digestive juices.
Compare: Small vs Large Intestine
Small Intestine
Water is absorbed. Waste is formed and moved to the rectum.
Large Intestine
Nutrients are absorbed into the blood. Enzymes break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
