Adjectives (bijvoeglijk nmw)


1. Frank is a good singer 
2. My brother is a careful driver.

An adjective modifies a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord). It tells us something about the noun.

Adverbs (bijwoord)
1. Frank sings well. 
2. My brother drives carefully.

An adverb (Bijwoord) can modify other words. It tells us for example how something happens, how often and in what manner. It can tell us something about an adjective, other adverb, verb or part of a sentence even!

Linking verbs + Adjective
1. My teachers are nice.
2. That car looks beautiful.
3. Haggis smells awful.

After linking verbs  (koppelwerkwoorden) :  be, seem, appear, become and words like feel, smell, taste  we use an adjective to modify the subject.

Linking verb / Action verb?
Some verbs, such as appear, look, feel, smell, and taste, can alsy be used as action verbs. 
  • If the modifier tells about the subject, use an adjective. 
  • If the modifier tells about the action of the verb, not the subject, use an adverb.
  
Adjective:    She looks confident in her new job.
Adverb:    She looks confidently at all the assembled partners.

Adjective:  The steak smells bad.
Adverb:  The chef smelled the lobster appreciatively.

The dog smells well.

An adverb can also tell us something about an adjective. 

1. Frank is an extremely good singer.
2. My brother is an awfully careful driver.
3. It's an absolutely perfect video clip.

An adverb can also tell us something about another adverb. 

1. Frank sings absolutely beautifully.
2. My brother drives really well.
3. That clip was filmed extremely perfectly.

An adverb can also tell us something about a sentence.
1. "Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today." -Mark Twain
2. "Fortunately, Ned was invited to a surprise party. Unfortunately, the party was a thousand miles away. Fortunately, a friend loaned Ned an airplane. Unfortunately, the motor exploded. Fortunately, there was a parachute in the airplane," (Charlip 1993).

-ly
You can form most adverbs by putting -ly after the word.
Beautiful - beautifully

Watch out! Sometimes you have to change the spelling of the word.
Terrible - terribly
Easy - easily

There are irregular adverbs as well! The adverb of good is  well - She's a good performer. She performs well. 

Some adverbs are the same as their adjectives. 
Fast (snel), fair (sportief/eerlijk), low (laag), high (hoog), hard (hard), long (lang), late (laat), loud (luid) en straight (onmiddelijk) - He's a fast driver, He drives fast
