Skin test
Why do you think we do a skin test?
Skin testing
You must skin test in the colour, or colours, you will use to complete the service.
You can skin test in up to 4 colours, 2 on each arm. Some manufacturers put the skin test behind the ear. However, if the client has a reaction this can cause the airway to become compromised, so on the arm is safer.
You mix 1g of colour with 1g developer (6% welloxon for koleston or 1.9% colour touch for colour touch) and place on the inside of the arm.
This must be left of for 45 minutes. After this time the client can remove the colour with warm water. They must then monitor the area for 48 hours for any signs of reaction
You MUST record the skin test on the clients record card. You must put:
Date skin test carried out
Colour/ Colours used (identifying where on the arm they were placed)
Skin testing
Skin tests must be carried out:
On all new clients
When using a new colour
If it has been over 6 months since the last colour service
Returning clients having the same colour do not need to havea skin test, as long as you complete an AAT (allergy alert test) questionnaire
AAT questionnaire
As part of your consultation, you must get your client to complete a AAT questionnaire.
These can be found on the notice board in dispensary.
Get your client to read through and answer the questions. If they answer yes to any questions, then you cannot go ahead with the colour.
You must get your client to sign your consultation sheet, and their record card, confirming they have answered the AAT questionnaire
Colour matching
Identifying clients natural and artificial hair colour
Before colouring a clients hair, you must know what their natural colour, and any artificial colour they have on the hair.
You do this by using your colour swatches
Colour swatches show the depth and tone of all colours
Depth= how light or dark the hair is
Tone= the colour we see (Copper, red, brunette etc)
