Active vs passive voice

Thousands of people watched the documentary.

The documentary was watched by thousands of people. 

Which sentence is active / passive?

What tense is it in?

What do you notice?

• active voice = subject does the action to the object
• passive voice = the object of the active voice becomes the subject: in the passive, the focus is on the action, not who did it.
• Tim threw a ball at his friend.

De passive is de lijdende vorm. Je gebruikt de lijdende vorm wanneer het belangrijk is wat er gebeurt en niet wie er iets doet.

> De passive heeft altijd 2 elementen: het werkwoord to be + een voltooid deelwoord.
- The food is preserved (present simple)

- The food was preserved (past simple)

- The food is being preserved (present continuous)

- The food was being preserved (past continuous)

- The food has been preserved (present perfect)

- The food had been preserved (past perfect)

STAPPENPLAN van active naar passive

1. Zoek het lijdend voorwerp (of meewerkend voorwerp) in de actieve zin.

John bought many houses last year.

2. Zet voorop in de nieuwe zin. Many houses ...

3. Zoek het werkwoordelijk gezegde = persoonsvorm + andere werkwoorden.

John bought many houses last year.

4. Bepaal de tijd van het werkwoordelijk gezegde uit de actieve zin.

bought = past simple

5. Zet om volgens het formule: was/were + past participle

bought = were (many houses = meervoud) bought

6. Herschrijf de zin (laat eventueel het onderwerp uit de oorspronkelijke zin weg).

Many houses were bought (by John).

John has bought many houses

Lijdend voorwerp? Many houses > vooraan

Werkwoord(en)? Has bought = present perfect > omzetten volgens de lijst > have been bought

Eventueel toevoegen: by John

A mistake has been made.

Sometimes a statement in the passive is more neutral and polite than the active voice, as the above example shows.

 

In this case, the focus is on the fact that a mistake has been made, but nobody is blamed.

(as opposed to the active sentence: He has made a mistake.)

What does it look like?

Too many crimes  are committed every year (by robbers).

• subject + am/are/is + past participle (+ by...) = passive present simple
• Robbers commit too many crimes every year = active present simple

Which sentence is written in the passive voice?

How would you change this active to the passive voice:

1. The diamond was stolen by the robbers.
2. The diamond stolen by the robbers.

4. The diamond was stolen.

Put these sentences into the passive:
Anna opened the window.
We had finished our homework.

Change these sentence into the active:
The car won't be repaired by Harry.
The swans were being fed by them.

Rewrite in the Passive Voice:
They won the game.
(This time, leave out 'by ...')

Correct this sentence:
There has been committed a murder.
