Unlocking the Secrets of the Brain

How was your Holiday ?

What do you already know about the brain?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will understand what each side of your brain does, why some people use one side more, and how to use both sides more effectively.

Workbook page 84

Have you ever heard people say that they use one side of their brain more than the other? This claim is based on the fact that each side of our brain is responsible for different tasks and emotions. In life, some people naturally turn to skills found in the left or right part of their brain because it is in their DNA to do this, or because they were raised by their families and educated by their schools to approach life in a certain manner.

What do people say about brain usage?

A

Use one side more than the other

B

Only the left side is used

C

Only the right side is used

D

Both sides are equally used

Our Two Brains

Your brain has two sides: the left and the right. Each side is responsible for different skills and emotions.

It is believed that the left side of our brain puts reason above all things and deals with logic. It is the part of our brain that enjoys planning things, handles problems in a practical way and pays attention to detail. Generally, the left side of the brain is also described as being better at language, numbers and critical thinking. However, one negative personality trait that the left part of the brain is also responsible for is a person’s aggressive behaviour.

What is a trait of the left brain?

A

Promotes creativity and spontaneity

B

Handles problems practically

C

Enjoys planning things

D

Better at language and numbers

On the other hand, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks, such as music and drawing. Some other abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include expressing emotions and being sociable and optimistic. People who use the right side of their brain more can be messier when giving a speech or talking to others. They are the idealists of this world. Unfortunately, despite their excellent communication skills, they won’t achieve much without some left-brained organisation.

What tasks is the right side of the brain best at?

A

Mathematical calculations

B

Music and drawing

C

Expressive and creative tasks

D

Logical reasoning

Left Brain vs. Right Brain

Left Side

Reason, logic, organisation, maths and language are its strengths.

Right Side

Creativity, art, emotion, and social skills are its strengths.

Drag and drop each statement into the correct category:

Left Brain (A) or Right Brain (B).

Logic, planning, and problem-solving

Creativity and artistic expression

Attention to detail and organisation

Expressing emotions and being sociable

Have you ever wondered which part of your brain you value the most? The side you rely on the most is usually the result of your environment and experiences. Doing word puzzles trains the left half of the brain, whereas an art class feeds the right half. The ideal brain is one where both sides are balanced with good connections throughout. After all, people talented in language, maths or art aren’t those who overuse half their brain but those who can use the whole picture.

Which brain side is trained by word puzzles?

A

Right side

B

None of the above

C

Both sides

D

Left side

What is the ideal brain condition?

A

Overusing one side

B

Balanced with good connections

C

Only left side

D

No connections

Why People Favour One Side

Some people use one side more because of nature, experiences, or how they are taught at home or school.

Negative Traits of the Left Brain

The left side can sometimes make people more aggressive if overused.

The Power of Balance

The most talented people connect both sides of their brain, using skills from each when needed.

Switching Sides

We can choose to use either side of our brain depending on the situation. This helps us face challenges and enjoy life more.

How to Train Both Sides

Do puzzles and maths to train your left side. Try art and music to train your right side.

Once we have achieved a balance between left- and right-brained thinking, we can choose at any moment to graze in the comfort zone of either side. So if you are left-brained in the way you approach life, you can choose at any moment to relax and enjoy life using the right part of your brain. Just because you are imaginative and understand abstract concepts doesn’t mean that you can’t be computer literate or learn to handle facts and figures. Which side of the brain do you choose to use and when?

Reflection : Which part do you use more: left or right? How can you practise balancing both sides every day
