Week 3- Healthy Food and why it is important

Why Do We Eat Food?
Food gives our bodies the energy and nutrients we need to learn, play, and grow. Some foods help our bodies more than others.
What Does ‘Healthy Food’ Mean?
Healthy food gives us vitamins, minerals, and energy. It helps our bodies stay strong and our minds stay sharp.
Healthy food is nutrient-dense, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber to maintain energy and prevent chronic illness

Types of Healthy Food
Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy, grains, and water. Eating a variety helps our bodies work well.
‘Sometimes Foods’ vs. ‘Everyday Foods’
Everyday Foods:

Chips, lollies, cakes, soft drinks. Tasty, but not for every day.
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, dairy and water.
The Healthy Food Pyramid
It contains the five core food groups, plus healthy fats, according to how much they contribute to a balanced diet based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines (2013).
The Healthy Eating Pyramid encourages Australians to enjoy a variety of foods from every food group, every day.
The Foundation (Bottom layer)
Biggest area because it is the most important foods that should make up the majority of our diet (70%)
Older children, teens and adults should aim to have at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables or legumes each day.

Middle Layer
Foods in the milk, yoghurt, cheese & alternatives group primarily provide us with calcium and protein, plus other vitamins and minerals

Top Layer
The top layer is split into two sections - Dairy and Poultry (Meat)
Foods in the Dairy group primarily provide us with calcium and protein, plus other vitamins and minerals
Foods in the lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, legumes section are our main sources of protein.
Food: Milk, Cheese, yogurt, alternative milks
Food: Meat, Lentils, Beans, Eggs, seeds, nuts, legumes and fish
Why Is Healthy Eating Important?
Eating healthy foods gives us energy, helps us grow strong, and keeps us from getting sick. It helps our brains and bodies to work well.

How Do Healthy Foods Help Our Bodies?
Fruits and veggies give us vitamins for strong bodies. Water keeps us hydrated. Good foods help us play, learn, and sleep well.
Don’t Forget Water!
Water is one of the healthiest drinks. Our bodies need it every day to work well.
Making Good Food Choices
Think about what you eat each day. Try to choose foods that help your body be strong and healthy.

Design a Healthy Meal Plan
Use the Australian Guide website or worksheet to plan your healthy meals. Draw or write your ideas. Get creative!
