At the end of the lesson you will be able to recognise, use, and compare fractions in baking activities.

What is a Fraction?

A fraction shows a part of a whole. In baking, we often use fractions to measure ingredients.

Examples of Fractions

Common baking fractions include 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4. These help us understand how much of each ingredient we need.

Why Use Fractions in Baking?

Using fractions in recipes helps us get the correct taste and amount.

The Numerator and Denominator

The top number tells how many parts we have (numerator). The bottom number tells the total number of parts (denominator).

Half in Baking – 1/2

Half means the whole is split in two equal parts. If a recipe needs 1/2 cup of sugar, you use only half the cup.

Quarter in Baking – 1/4

A quarter is one out of four equal parts. 1/4 teaspoon of salt means use just one part if salt is split into four equal heaps.

Three-Quarters – 3/4

Three-quarters means you use three out of four parts. 3/4 cup flour is almost a whole cup, but not quite.
