Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Show the students where the industrial revolution happened. Do they understand this causation with CO2 emissions and the use of coal?

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Ask the students if they have ever been to France. Can they imagine how the weather can change in NL?! And in other parts of the world?

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Perhaps discuss with the students what kind of human behaviour links to these industries; what things can consumers change for themselves?

Goal: to increase understanding of the share of rich countries in the carbon footprint.

Part 1:
Make groups (4 persons)
  1. Write the continents (per color) down including the big countries within them.
  2. Go to https://www.gapminder.org/tools/. Here you see a ‘bubblechart’
  3. What is written on the X-as (Horizontal)? What does it mean?
  4. On the Y-as (vertical) you see life expectancy. Klick on the triangle (menu) and select an option that you would like to explore.
  5. Click on the PLAY button at the bottom left. How many years will pass?

Part 2:
Investigating carbon in relation to prosperity
  1. Where do you need to click on the Y-axis if we want to investigate carbon? And on the X axis?
  2. Click on the PLAY button at the bottom left. How many years will pass?
  3. What do you see happening per continent? Are there countries that stand out?

Together:
What can we conclude? Why?

Towards rain seasons?

Hotter and dryer summers - more drought

More wet and more soft winters  - extreme precipitation

          Precipitation will be less regular

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

Deze slide heeft geen instructies

Summers

  •      evaporation caused by higher temperatures

  • Drought ☞ poor water absorbation  in the soil

  • Faster water drainage during rain showers ☞ drop in groundwater table
Winters

  •        Precipitation

  • Extra water from the mountains due to melting ice and snow (e.g. the Alpes)

  • Both must be drained by our rivers

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Urbanization
  • Cities grow

  • More concrete and bricks covering our soil

  • Water cannot be collected in the soil ☞ floodings

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

What do we need to do to
decrease floods and drought?

Slide 23 - Woordweb

Make a list with the students of what they think are the best ways, based on systems thinking
Verstening
Flooding in the city
Current and future problems
Natural solutions
Increased change in heavy rainfall
Floods
Setteling of our soil
Overusage of our sewers
Green roofs / garens and facades
Less concrete
More plants
Water storage arieas
