Fractions and Decimals

What do you already know about fractions and decimals?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will recognise simple fractions and decimals and be able to say what they mean.

What is a Fraction?

A fraction shows a part of a whole. For example, 1/2 means one out of two equal parts.

Seeing Fractions in Real Life

If you cut a chocolate bar into 4 pieces and take 1, you have one quarter or 1/4.

What is a Decimal?

A decimal is another way to show parts of a whole. 0.5 means half, just like 1/2.

Fractions and Decimals Match

0.5 = One half 0.25 = One quarter 0.75 = Three quarters

1/2 = One half 1/4 = One quarter 3/4 = Three quarters

We use them in daily life: sharing food, counting money, and measuring things like water or time.

Quick Check!

If you share a pizza between 4 friends, what fraction does each friend get? What is this as a decimal?
