Every year the French celebrate Bastille Day but why is it so important?

The Bastille was a prison where people

could be imprisoned without a trial.

On 14th July 1789, rioters stormed the Bastille,

killing the guards, and freed the prisoners inside.

The people were fed up with the king asking

them for more tax money.  They could not 

pay for food.

They rebelled against King Louis XVI and his wife,

Marie Antoinette.  Eventually they executed them

on the guillotine.

The people said there would be no more king.  They

would have a republic where everyone was equal.

Their new motto was Liberté,  Égalité, Fraternité 

(freedom, equality and brotherhood).

The Eiffel Tower was built to celebrate

the 100th anniversary of the storming

of the Bastille.
