Direct questions
There are two types of direct questions. 

1) Closed questions where the answer is yes or no.

Have you worked in sales before?
Do you have any experience for this position?

Direct Questions 
2) Open questions starting with 'what - who - why - when - where - how - etc.
You cannot answer with a yes or no. 
 
Why did you decide to travel for a year?
What working hours are you available?

Indirect questions
These are used to be more polite or when a question is more difficult or challenging. 

Different ways of starting indirect questions are:

- Can/ Could you tell me/ us ...
Can you tell me how many people work in the department?

Indirect questions: closed or open
You can be polite and use an indirect question to get a yes/ no answer.

Direct closed question: Do you provide training? ( Yes / No)
Indirect closed question: I would like to know whether you provide training. (Yes/ No)

Direct closed question: Will I need to travel? ( Yes/ No)
Indirect closed question: Could you tell me whether I will need to travel?
