Clauses
  • Clauses are just parts of sentences.
  • If you remember the first conditional then you know how to work with clauses. For example:
  • If we go to school, we will learn more than when we skip it.
  • If we go to school = if/conditional clause
  • we will learn more than when we skip it. = future simple clause.
  • Rule: we never use will or would in the if clause of condition.

Future time clauses (simple)
  • Future time clauses are also parts of sentences, but they come after these words: after, as soon as, by the time, immediately, in case, once, on condition that, the minute, the moment, until, when
  • We use the present simple after such a clause, so:
  • I will send you a text as soon as I'm free.
  • So not: I will send you a texts as soon as I'll be free.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Future time clauses (perfect)
(after, as soon as, by the time, immediately, in case, once, on condition that, the minute, the moment, until, when)
  • After these words in a future time clause, we use  the present perfect to talk about things that are complete in the future. So:
  • I'll let you know as soon as I've got the results back.
  • So not I'll let you know as soon as I will have got the results back.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Future time clauses (continuous)
after, as soon as, by the time, immediately, in case, once, on condition that, the minute, the moment, until, when
  • After these words in a future time clause, we use the present continuous to talk about things that are in progress in the future. So:
  • Tonight I'm going to the concert. I'll let you know how it was when I'm travelling back home.
  • So not: Tonight I'm going to the concert. I'll let you know how it was when I will be travelling back home.
