Effleurage 
WHEN IS IT USED:
During shampooing and conditioning. 
HOW TO PREFORM:

Effleurage massage is a gentle stroking movement. It is used to apply and distribute shampoo and conditioner to the hair.

Rotary 
WHEN IS IT USED:
During shampooing
HOW TO PREFORM:
Rotary is a firm, fast circular movement using the pads of fingers over the scalp. 
BENEFIT TO CLIENT:
Stimulates the blood supply to the scalp, relaxing.

Friction 
WHEN IS IT USED:
During shampooing
HOW TO PREFORM:
Friction is a vigorous rubbing movement using the finger pads. It is only done for a few minutes working from the front to back of the head. 
REASON FOR USE AND BENEFITS:
Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow because of the quick, firm movements. Only carried out on dry scalps. 

Must not be used on clients with oily scalps!!!!!!!

Petrissage 
WHEN IS IT USED: During conditioning
HOW TO PREFORM:
Petrissage is a slow, firm, deep, circular kneading movement. The idea of the massage is to move the scalp, not your hands. Not to be used on oily scalps.

REASONS AND BENEFITS:

Relaxing end to the shampoo and conditioning service. Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow.

Health and Safety 
Ensure that your work area is clean and tidy 
-The client is wearing a gown & towel. 

- Ensure all electrical equipment is PAT tested - check the sticker on the wire

- Report any equipment to staff or technician that you think is faulty. 

- Check the hairdryer for a guard on the back 

- Check the temperature of the water on a small section of the head. 

- Any shampoo or product that gets in the eyes must be rinsed with eye wash, report it to a member of staff. 

- Check for allergies

  • They penetrate the hairs outer layer into the cortex  and adds strength and moisture to the hair
  • Penetrating conditioners need to be on the hair for 1-15 minutes depending on the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Putting the client under heat helps the conditioner to penetrate deeper into the hair

Cuticle 
  • Is made up of transparent overlapping scales 
  • Heat/ chemicals will open the cuticles 
  • The cuticle scales should ideally be closed from root to tip to give the hair shine and lustre 
  • Healthy hair reflects light 
  • Damaged cuticle scales will make the hair feel porous and appear dull
  • When the hair is in good condition they are water repellent and when in poor condition they will allow more water to be absorbed into the hair making it more porous.

Cortex 
  • This is the section under the cuticle and is where most the action happens.  
  • Your natural colour is determined in the cortex and this is where artificial colouring mostly takes place.
  • It is this layer that has the bonds which hold your hair in place to determine if your hair is straight, wavy, curly or very curly. 
  • Where the hair is temporarily or chemically changed from straight to curly or curly to straight. 
  • It is the main part of the hair that gives it's strength and elasticity.

Medulla  
  • The medulla is the least interesting layer. 
  • it is the central part of the hair but is not always present. 
  •  In a single strand it may fade in and out when analysed under a microscope  or it may be present all the way through in some hair types.
  • it tends to appear in more thicker or coarser hair textures.
