Once there was a wise and wealthy king. As he grew old, he entrusted the throne to his kind and just son, with one important instruction.

The king told his son never to use the royal treasury while he was alive. After the king's death, the son should share the wealth with the poor.
The Prince's Unusual Habit
When the son became king, he was just and kind. However, he often rode out at night, holding a lamp behind him instead of in front. People were curious about this strange behaviour.
The Father’s Question
When the former king learned of his son’s odd habit, he asked, 'Why do you carry the lamp behind you, not in front?'
The Prince’s Wisdom
The new king explained: 'It is better to do good in one's lifetime. If you wait, giving to the poor after you are gone will be like following a lamp from behind—it is too late to see the path clearly.'
