  • The first harbours developed in the city centre: the city triangle
  • After 1870: Rotterdam harbour was important for import and export

  • After WW2. Aim: restore the city centre. Fast and efficiently. It lacked character. 
  • After 1980: to make the city centre more attractive to live, work and spend leisure time

After 1980 the renewal had an aim to make the city more pleasant to live in and work in. New offices were needed for companies providing commercial services and companies in the quaternary sector
