The Eastern Roman Empire was called the Byzantine EmpireThe Byzantine Empire eventually grew larger and became very powerful (Figure 3.3, p. 58)

The Western Roman Empire was invaded by Germanic tribes (barbarians) and a lot of knowledge and culture was lost.
