Reading critically and for comprehension

How to deal with words we don't know?

• Skim the text for gist, and select the appropriate title / answer the question what is the text about? (answer in no more than 20 words) (5min)
• Scan the text and annotate words you do know - highlight key words you don't know. (DO NOT LOOK THESE UP) (10 min) 
• Scan the text again, and look for requested specific information, focusing on words they know, images, context, what's around the key info etc. (See UNLOCK THE CODE  on the next slide) (15 min)
• Read for detail to build solid comprehension in the style of a reading assessment using the new criteria.
