After this lesson:
... you know how the Alps were formed
... you know what sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock are

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Highest mountains in Europe
  • Long time ago there was a huge sea on the site where now the Alps are
  • Dead remains of plants and animals sank to the bottom and accumulated. Layer upon layer.
  • Layers become covered with sand and rocks
  • Creating sedimentary rocks

Faults in the Earth's crust

Slabs or tectonic
plates

Constantly moving

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

The movement of plates
  • Side by side

  • To each other

  • Away from each other

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Formation of the Alps
Endogenic forces
fold mountain range
Mountain range formed when the collision of tectonic plates creates folds in parts of the Earth’s crust.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Experiment
We are going to mimic the formation of the Alps. The important thing is that you participate, and I don't expect students to fool around.
Equipment:
  • Cutting board in pairs
  • Snicker & Mars
  • Knife (Teacher)

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Steps
1) Get a cutting board
2) The teacher will give you the candy bars
3) Wait for the order to open the candy bar
4) Throw the papers of the candybars in the thrash can

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Steps
5) Gently press the mars against the snicker on the cutting board. They should go together. Be careful!
6) Wait for the teacher to come by, to cut the snicker and mars in half
7) Watch the explanation of the teacher
8) At the end you can eat the candybars

Formation of the Alps
Endogenic forces
fold mountain range
Mountain range formed when the collision of tectonic plates creates folds in parts of the Earth’s crust.

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Fold mountain range
  • A lot of pressure
  • Rock changes due to pressure --> metamorphic rocks
  • From limestone to marble
  • People use this rock for houses and buildings

Let's go to work
Get started with the first assignments of §2.1
VWO: assignment 1a (topography), 4, 5 and 7

Finished? Then make of §2.1 assignments 2, 3, 6, 8, 9 and 10
