Slide 4 - Video

The exposure to input

Students need to listen to this clip about what bleed air is and its function to discuss.
How does the bleed air system function?

Slide 5 - Woordweb

Using a mind map to open a dialogue between your students activates them and provide a more interactive stimulation for understanding.

Bloom taxonomy level 2: Understanding
Bloom's taxonomy verb:
Why are the main components so important to the bleed air system?
A
Because they are necessary parts in the creation of pneumatic power
B
Because it is necessary to provide pneumatic power to the pneumatic system in the specific aircraft.

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

For a more result-oriented overview of student understanding, add global MC to keep students focus on the lesson topic and to stimulate critical thinking.

*It helps to put timers on these questions to energize students

What is bleed air?
A
It is just extracted air that is being used in the pneumatic system
B
It is hot, highly compressed air that is taken from the airplane's engine.

Exercise 1 - Vocabulary
After watching the video, complete the following:
  • Go to exercise 1 a and b
  • List the pneumatic components mentioned in the video.
  • Describe in your own words what the pneumatic system is and does.
  • Match the functions of the components and list the systems they supply power to.

Processing content:

I used an ICT feature called "drag and drop" for students to place in the correct order.

The focus of this activity is to remind them which systems the pneumatic system powers.

Listening
Before you start, a listening exercise and make it easier for you to understand:
  • Read the questions
  • Think about what you already know about the subject
We are going to listen to an explanation of how the pneumatic system works:
  • Go to www.edpuzzle.com
  • Log in with your own name and password (use your personal Gmail account to gain quick access)
  • Click on join class and get started with the EdPuzzle
  • Pay attention: Answer the questions AND list the systems with the help of the diagram
  • Watch the video called ‘737NGX Training-Bleed Air’

Exercise 2: Answers
1. What is bleed air?
Compressed, highly pressurized air that is very hot. It is used to power certain systems that require energy from pressurized air.

2. Is the temperature of the bleed air stable?
No, it varies a lot depending on where it’s extracted from. It varies from 250 degrees Celsius.

3. Name three systems that bleed air provides with power.
Engine one and two start systems, air-conditioning and cabin pressurization, engine one and two anti-ice systems, wing anti-ice systems, water tank pressurization system, hydraulic system A and B reservoir pressurization system, air temperature probe aspiration system and nitrogen gas generation.

Exercise 2: Answers

4. What is the function of the pneumatic manifold system?
It collects all the air from the three systems that provide pneumatic power.

5. What is the function of the bleed air isolation valve?
It divides the pneumatic manifold in a left and a right side, this provides system redundancy.

6. What is the function of the duct pressure transmitters?
It provides indications to the duct pressure pointers in the forward overhead panel.

7. From which part of the engine is bleed air extracted?
The compressor section, the 5th and 9th stage.

8. What is the function of the fifth stage check valve?
It prevents bleed air from the 9th stage to get into the 5th stage bleed airport.

Keep working!
In the future, you will need to read a lot of manuals at your job. It is very important to read manuals carefully. If you miss something, that might lead to a catastrophic mistake.

Some paragraphs were missing from the manuals
You will find the missing paragraph in the table
Place the missing paragraphs at the correct gap in the text

Output:

Every output should involve CLT (communicative language teaching) because it encourages the students to produce what they've learned product.  This will ensure retention and better understanding of how it all works.

You can even add an extra detail to that activity by suggesting the students to use the vocabulary that was used in the lesson or the grammar topic that was discussed.
