1. Egg
Butterflies lay their eggs on leaves.

2. Caterpillar

(Larva)
When the egg hatches it comes out as a caterpillar or larva.

Stage 3. Chrysalis (pupa)
  • The caterpillars form a chrysalis (a type of hard shell) by hanging upside down and shedding their skin one last time. Inside, they are changing very quickly. 
  • This stage will last 10-14 days.
  •  Butterflies go through a complete metamorphosis (major changes to their body in 4 stages.)
What is Metamorphosis?
Metamorphosis is a big word that simply means: "A big change to their body form that some animals and insects go through during their life cycles."

4. Adult
When the caterpillar has completely changed, a butterfly will come out of the chrysalis.
