What Is a Theme?

A theme is a big idea or message in a story. It helps us understand what the story is trying to tell us.

Who Was George Orwell?

George Orwell wrote 1984. He wanted to show us what might happen in a world where people are always watched.

What Is 1984 About?

1984 is a story about a place where a group called the Party is always watching people and telling them what to do.

Theme 1: Control

In 1984, the Party controls everything people do, hear, and see.

Control Means...

The Party watches people with cameras and listens to their words.

Theme 2: Freedom

People in 1984 do not have freedom. They are told what to think and feel.

No Freedom

People in the story cannot do what they want or say what they feel.

Theme 3: Truth

The Party changes facts and tells lies. People do not know what is true.

Truth Is Hidden

The Party makes up stories and erases real memories.

Theme 4: Rebellion

Some people in 1984 try to fight back against the Party.
