Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Summary

Dumb Laws

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

1. Open Discussion
I want to start with a warm-up discussion question:

In The Netherlands, are there any rules or laws which a tourist should be aware of?  Are there any laws in your country which you would change if you had the power?

Please, discuss this amongst yourselves for a couple of minutes in English...

2. Forming groups
Next, divide yourselves into three large groups of (roughly) eight. These will be groups A, B and C.

Sit accordingly ==> Group A sits on the right side of the room, Group B in the middle and Group C on the left.

Next, divide your larger group into two smaller groups of roughly four. Sit together (you may move tables around).

3. Which law is a lie?
Next, I will hand you a worksheet with a list of laws on it. Every group gets different sheets.

On each sheet, two laws are not true!
In your group of four, decide which laws are not true.
You have around four minutes for this.

4. The lies are...
I will now show you which laws were the laws.
DO NOT LET THE OTHER GROUPS KNOW WHAT THE LIES ARE!

Group A -- Laws 3 + 8
Group B -- Laws 13 + 17
Group C -- Laws 28 + 30

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

5. Describe two laws and one lie
Each group should now choose 3 laws from their 10, of which 2 will be true and 1 will be false
You must make up convincing justifications for them all being true!
You need to write these down!

6. New groups
Make new groups so that each group has (at least) 1 person with A, B and C.

Please, sit together.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

7. Which law is the lie [2]?
Last one to have broken a rule, starts.
Read aloud the three laws that you picked and the explanation why these laws are in effect.
DO NOT SHOW THE WORKSHEET TO THE OTHERS YET!

The rest of the group has to guess which is the lie.
After that, change student and do it again, until all laws of A, B and C are done.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

8. Which law is the most stupid?
Next, show each person in your group all worksheets.

Decide amongst each other which of these 30 laws is the most stupid. Also, come up with an explanation why.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

9. More stupid laws from around the world
As a closer, we will now look at more stupid laws around the world.
We were working on laws this class, because next class we will start Chapter 3, which is about law and order.
