• you know how two-point perspective works and how to apply it

one point perspective

What is perspective?

Perspective is a trick to create depth on the flat surface. For example in a painting or drawing.

(Ways to do this you have learned in the past: Atmospheric perspective, plans, one point perspective, overlap, cut off, etc.)

Lineperspective

The horizon plays a major role in line perspective. 

These are  types of line perspective:

• With 1 vanishing point
• With 2 vanishing points
• With 3 vanishing points
• even 4 and 5 exists

1 Vanishing point

*    vertical lines remain vertical

*    horizontal lines remain horizontal

*    only the lines going into the depth *    (receding lines) end up in the  vanishing point on the horizon

2 Vanishing points

• Vanishing Points: Place two points on the horizon line. These are your vanishing points.
  
  
• Parallel Lines: Lines that are parallel in real life will appear to converge at these vanishing points in your drawing.
  
  
• Height Stays Vertical: The vertical lines (height) of the objects in your drawing stay straight up and down.

This technique makes objects look more realistic by showing how they get smaller as they go back into space.

Practice 

You get an example of two point perspective. 

Where would the vanishing points be? they might not be in the picture..!

3 Vanishing points

Sometimes an artist also uses a vanishing point for the parallel lines that go up. This can have a strong effect on the suggestion of apartment buildings for example. The artist then decides where the vanishing point would be, high in the sky or in 4 point also in depth.

POSITIONS 

and point of view

Horizon and vanishing point can occur at different heights.

It depends on the point of view of the artist.

Human Eye View

The artist is at eye level, the horizon and the vanishing point are in the center of the artwork.

Birds eye view

The artist has a high point of view and looks down on an object.

The horizon and the vanishing point are high in the artwork.

Frog eye view

The artist has a low point of view and looks up to an object.

The horizon and the vanishing point are low in the artwork.

How to draw? 

I'm showing you step by step, how to draw basic shapes in two point perspective. 

Materials:

• Paper (position landscape)
• Pencil (H)
• Ruler

What to do next?

Practice two point perspective by yourself

• Draw three cubes on different hights, make them transparent. If that is done--->
• Go to google classroom en watch the video's. Draw while you watch!
• Draw a house with a pointed roof
• Draw a stairs
• Draw a street with shops, take notice of the details!!

Homework

Next week you have practiced two point perspective. 

• Draw three cubes on different hights
• One has a door opening, one has a window  and one is on a pillar. 
• Draw a hole in the floor (like a swimming pool)
• Draw a stairs with at least 3 steps. 

Next week we will start the actual assignment -> Draw a modern villa in two point perspective

Assignment

Draw a modern house, consisting of only geometric shapes, from a two-point perspective.

1. Work with a sharp H or HB pencil. (no 2b)
2. Draw a horizon with low point of view (bit below the middle of your paper)
3. Place two vanishing points on the edge of your paper.
4. Start with 1 cube, you decide where and how big it is.
5. Add cubes, beams and other geometric shapes to make the building bigger. Also think of overhangs for example. 
6. Add windows and doors and if you like it, and can do it: stairs.
7. The more variety and originality, the better. (Go wild 😜 )

Tips and assessment

Tips

• Use a sharpened hard pencil (H of HB)
• Use a ruler for each(!) line.
• Draw your guides very lightly so you can erase them easily.
• Add shadow with a soft pencil to enhance the spatial effect.
• Trace the lines with a fine liner (and ruler)

Assessment

• Correct perspective (!)
• Use of ruler and sharp pencil
• Original, invented by yourself.
• The more complicated, the better you can score.
• Put your first name + last name + class on the back in the top left corner.

What are vanishing points and horizon lines?

To help you understand what perspective really is and how to use is, you can watch this video. In this video both the horizon line and vanishing points will be discussed. These are the basic yet most important principles involved in perspective.

Two-point perspective

Something new! Two-point perspective. The homework assignment is to make a drawing with this technique. Start by drawing 3 cubes. One on the horizon, one above and one below, just like the first video.
Watch the step by step explanation. Pause the movie in between to draw along with it.

Once you are succesfull, add a door and window to one of the cubes, add a pointed roof (see second video) and add a swimmingpool somewhere (yes, figure it out!).    

At the end, you photograph this exercise

Inspiration for the assignment

Eventually you are going to draw a house using two-point perspective. You can watch some of these video's to get some inspiration. Be careful, I want you to come up with your own design!
